Noah Basketball Welcomes Data Scientist Dr. Gus Omer to the Team
Noah Basketball is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Gus Omer to our team. He has assumed the role of Principal Data Scientist and will be an essential element as Noah works to provide detailed analyses from our dataset for basketball fans and Noah users.
Dr. Omer comes to Noah Basketball with a deep background in data modeling and analytics. Prior to his coming here, he worked in the defense industry designing, evaluating and running models related to human effects and human performance. Prior to that, he obtained a Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) where his research primarily focused on systems modeling, analysis and optimization. The allure of combining his love of sports and science led to his joining the Noah Basketball team last month.
“I grew up visiting the gym, weight room, and playing field, as my dad was a strength and conditioning coach at a number of Division 1 universities,” Dr. Omer said. “It was amazing seeing these elite-level athletes work so hard first-hand and later watching them in the NFL, NBA, or MLB. It really instilled in me a love of all things sports.”
In his new position, Dr. Omer will be elbow deep in the increasingly large and complex dataset Noah Basketball is collecting. “We have over 200 million shots tracked,” he said. “Putting that many basketballs side-by-side is enough to go around the world and then some! There is so much information in there we can extract.”
His focus will be on providing informative and actionable data and analysis for customers. “It’s when we use data to improve performance, make predictions, and guide choices that it really becomes valuable,” he said.
We are thrilled to have Gus join our Noah Basketball team and look forward to applying his insights to our data.
